Fighting Bill Fargo (1941)
Johnny Mack Brown essays the title role in Universal’s Fighting Bill Forgo. Returning to his home town, Bill Fargo takes over the operation of his late father’s newspaper. He quickly gets swept up in political intrigue fomented by political boss Hackett (Kenneth Harlan), who has a cute habit of rubbing out any and all honest candidates for the sheriff’s office.

Twinkletoes (1926)
“Twinkletoes” Minasi wants to be a great dancer like her deceased mother. Twink meets Chuck Lightfoot, a noted prizefighter, who falls in love with her at first sight. She tries to avoid falling in love with Chuck, whose wife, Cissie, is a drunken harridan and more than a little bit spiteful. Meanwhile, Twink has secured a job in a singing-dancing act in a Limehouse theater, under the auspices of Roseleaf, who has more than just a protective interest in the girl. The jealous Cissie discovers that Twink’s sign-painting father also has a night job as a burglar, and she turns him into the police. While a big success dancing on the stage, the arrest of her father has left her somewhat down in the dumps, and she decides to toss herself into the Thames. Possibly, the now-free Chuck, since Cissie has been killed in an accident, might come along and rescue her.

A Million To One (1937)
John Kent (Monte Blue’ ) wins the Olympic decathlon but is disqualified on a charge of professionalism. William Stevens (Kenneth Harlan), the second-place finisher, is awarded the title and trophies. Six years later Kent is running a moving truck for a living and training his young son Johnny (Bruce Bennett) to become an athlete. Chance brings about a meeting between Ken and Stevens, now a prosperous business man, with a little daughter, Joan (Joan Fontaine), who makes friends with young Johnny. As the years pass, the grown-up Johnny has developed to where he stands a chance of becoming an Olympic athlete and is in love with Joan. Mr. Stevens also wants to see Johnny succeed, and is annoyed that his attention to Joan may interfere with his training.

The Toll of the Sea (1922)
When young Lotus Flower sees an unconscious man floating in the water near the seashore, she quickly gets help for him. The man is Allen Carver, an American visiting China. Soon the two have fallen in love, and Carver promises to take her with him when he returns home. But Carver’s friends discourage him from doing this, and he returns to the USA alone. By the time the two of them meet again, much has changed, and their reunion proves very trying for them both.

Paradise Island (1930)
Ellen Bradford comes to the south sea island of Tonga to marry her fiancée and finds out he is a drunk. She also finds out that she is the only white woman on the island and, as such, has three men taking a deep interest in her. She has written off her fiancée, and has learned real quick like that “Dutch Mike” Lutze is not to be trusted in any way. That leaves Jim Thorne, the only man who has ever bested Lutze in anything and, while Jim is an adventurer and pirate-at-heart, he knows how to be a gentleman, especially to the only white woman in town or on the island. Lutze is offended. They play poker for a plantation, Ellen, and all the pearls in the Pacific. Loser gets Poppi. Lutz has a marked deck of cards.
