    Texhnolyze

    Texhnolyze is a Japanese anime television series directed by Hiroshi Hamasaki, from a screenplay by Chiaki Konaka, and produced by Yasuyuki Ueda, with original character design by Yoshitoshi ABe.

    The events take place in the vibrant yet dilapidated underground city of Lux. Denizens of Lux have come to call it “The City” and treat it as a sentient force. Three factions vie for control of the city: the Organo, a strictly professional conglomerate with ties to the criminal underworld in the prosthetics business; the Union, a fanatical populist group interfering with Organo’s affairs; and Racan, a marauding group of Texhnolyzed youths. The series has an ensemble cast, but events particularly focus on Ichise, a stoic prize fighter who loses a leg and an arm to satisfy an enraged promoter; Onishi, a young but level-headed executive of the Organo who has many enemies; and Ran, a little girl who has a very important gift that affects the entire city. As they struggle to accept the challenges that they are dealt, the characters bear witness to major events that determine whether the city continues to exist.

    Texhnolyze aired on Fuji Television from April 16, 2003 to September 24 of the same year, totaling twenty episodes. Two “secret” episodes were included in the DVD release.

    Guilty Crown is a 2011 Japanese anime television series produced by Production I.G which aired on Fuji TV’s noitaminA program block from October 2011. The story revolves around Shu Ouma, a high school boy who inadvertently obtains an ability called “The Power of the Kings” that enables him to draw out items called “Voids” from other people. He is then thrown into the conflict between a resistance group called Funeral Parlor which aims to restore Japan’s independence from a quasi-governmental organization known as the GHQ. In the process, Shu has to deal with the burden his ability puts on his shoulders and the horrific mystery of his past. The series incorporates elements of numerous genres, mostly drawing from science fantasy.

    One manga adaptation has been published by Square Enix in their Monthly Shōnen Gangan which began in November 2011. A light novel was published by Nitroplus entitled Guilty Crown: Princess of Deadpool in April 2012. A spin-off visual novel named Guilty Crown: Lost Christmas was also developed by Nitroplus which came bundled with a 15 minute original video animation tentatively named Guilty Crown: Lost Christmas. Critics praised the series’ presentation but panned the plot for being jumbled and cliché.

    Cold Lazarus

    Cold Lazarus is a four-part British television drama written by Dennis Potter with the knowledge that he was dying of cancer of the pancreas.

    It forms the second half of a pair with the television serial Karaoke. The two serials were filmed as a single production by the same team; both were directed by Renny Rye and feature Albert Finney as the writer Daniel Feeld. The plays were unique in being co-productions between the BBC and Channel 4, something Potter had expressly requested before his death. The show was first aired on Channel 4 in 1996 on Sunday evenings, with a repeat on BBC1 the following day.

    Parts of Karaoke and Cold Lazarus were filmed in the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, which is where Dennis Potter was born and raised, and children from local schools including St. Briavels Parochial Primary School starred in the film as extras in flashbacks.

    As a result of the BBC and Channel 4 collaboration on these works, the copyright and further usage rights have remained unclear. However, both are available to watch online via the Channel 4 website, and Virgin Media’s on demand service. Both Karaoke and Cold Lazarus were released on DVD from Acorn Media in September 2010.
