The Iron Curtain (1948)
PKR 350The Iron Curtain is based on the actual 1945 case of Soviet cipher clerk Igor Gouzenko, (Dana Andrews), who, after careful training, was assigned to the U.S.S.R. Embassy in Ottawa, Canada in the midst of World War II. Eventually, Gouzenko defected with 109 pages of material implicating several high level Canadian officials, outlined the steps taken to secure information about the the details of the nuclear bomb via numerous sleeper cells established throughout North America. The scandal that resulted when details of this case were publicized by American columnist Drew Pearson in early 1946 involved Canada, Britain and the United States.

Prison Without Bars (1938)
PKR 350Prison Sans Barreaux (Prison Without Bars) takes place in a private correctional institution for young women. Annie Duchaux stars as Yvonne, the new director of the institution, who is of the opinion that her charges will respond better to kindness than brutality. One who benefits greatly from Yvonne’s progressive policies is an inmate named Nelly (Corinne Luchaire), who transforms from a hardened sociopath to a useful member of society. Alas, this triumph proves to have its price when Nelly falls in love with Yvonne’s doctor fiancé (Roger Duchesne). Handled with subtlety rather than sensationalism, Prison Sans Barreaux remains one of the better “girls in jail” efforts.

Escape! (1930)
PKR 350When Matt Denant (Gerald de Maurier) finds himself wrongly imprisoned for manslaughter, he takes an opportunity to escape from jail during a foggy day and is forced to rely on the goodwill of local people to remain a fugitive of the law. The first film produced by Associated Talking Pictures, which would eventually evolve into Ealing Studios.
